fbhjr: Deep South (Deep South)

I woke up about my normal time and found it very difficult to see shore at all.

The map says we went out the eastern end of the straight instead of the southern. I guess this was to get more protection from the land as we went and make better time.

My wife is awake and ready to go. At least that’s what she told me just before I took this photo…

We had breakfast in the lounge where we had dinner the night before. It is a very light breakfast, but nice view.

We had to get everything that was going to shore ready for the inspection to make sure it wouldn’t contaminate anything.
This started with the boots we rented. We had to try them on and see if they fit.

We did get to see the mud room where you take them off to dry on return from land. But, it is up to you to clean them of anything. (Expect penguin poop…)

We then gathered the rest of our equipment from the closed we had more or less dumped things in the day before.

We then waited for our turn at the mandatory training to go ashore.

So, we explored the ship some.

We saw the Zodiacs that will be used to transport us.

And, we found the forward lounge at the top of the ship.

Then, training time. It’s pretty basic. Do what they tell you. Stay on the path. Don’t annoy the locals.

After that, lunch at the main restaurant. I had the sea bream. Good, but it stayed with me all day.

We were getting closer to the “horn” at the end of South America.

An 80 km/hr wind is pretty good.

It led to lots of waves.

Just as we reached the tip, it was time for afternoon tea.

The seas got rougher and the whole ship was shaking.

This made drinking the tea difficult. They had to bring me a new saucer.

While this was going on, the waitstaff was also giving lessons on how to fold napkins into interesting designs. It was pretty strange.

My wife did take a nap, but then got up to do laundry.

In the evening the captain invited everyone to the theater to give us a toast for the voyage.
I was very impressed that as the boat moved back and forth and everyone swayed with it, the captain stood there like he was part of the deck and didn’t move at all.

It was nice to see the officers too.

We ate so many of the sandwiches at afternoon tea that we decided to skip dinner.
So, we’ll probably turn in early and see another sea day tomorrow.

That tea looked delicious! And filling, I can see why you skipped dinner.
