The taste of Sith
Nov. 16th, 2008 11:32 pmToday was day 2 of the Mobile Renaissance faire. Today was about the same temperature as yesterday, but much less windy. That was good.
However, in the morning, it was still cold. Folks tended to act like they were solar powered and sit in the sun when they could.

I’d like to say all those cars in the lot were for us, but most of them are for the gun show next door. Still a fair number of them seemed to come by after they looked at guns, so it worked out. Less folks from the dog show the past few years seemed interested in crossing over. So, I guess guns are better for ren faires then dogs.
Performing on the cold cement stage in the wind was quite cold.

But, we managed.
Because it was Sunday morning in the bible belt, and cold and windy, the crowds weren’t much at the start.

This year

We did seem to pick up a weird stalker on Saturday. We thought we had ditched him at the end of the day, but he showed up again Sunday.

He’s the guy in black.
Yesterday I tried to get him to go away by suggesting he watch the joust. I even went over to watch it myself, hoping he’d follow.

I don’t normally watch the joust, and it didn’t seem to work anyhow.
Today he brought a sword with him, and he went to talk with the organizer’s partner about getting it fixed. That seemed to keep him away from us.
We had a couple of students come by making a film for a school project.

We talked with them for a while about the history we work with and techniques. Don’t know what they were after, but hopefully they got it.
As the day went on, the crowds did get better. But, not to the extent of yesterday. Our singers and friends seemed to do well in the food area.

But, that probably wouldn’t work for the sword fighting.
One of the food vendors was selling “slushies” with strange flavors. It’s basically a cup of shaved ice with fruit flavor on it.
But, they had a lot of strange names. I had to go up and ask about the “Darth Vader” flavor.
I got one.
It wasn’t what I expected.

To be fair, I had never really expended much thought on what Darth Vader would taste like. But, even the very little that came to mind was not in line with the reality of it.

Apparently, Darth Vader tastes like grape.
Yes, that’s what I said. Purple grape even.
Even if it wasn’t what I expected,

After the faire, we went to a Sonny’s barbecue near the faire. As is often the case, Tommy made interesting balloon things while we ate.

It grew as the might progressed.

History does repeat itself.

The group Faire Wynds joined us at dinner. They are excellent performers and very nice people. Their daughter, who performs with them, turned 18 today. So, certain pirate captains had to make sure birthday songs were sung to her.

She also managed to get the balloon hat as a present.

My wife and I sat with her parents, discussing opera, museums, history, performance venues, theology and religious jokes.
It was a good time.
Tomorrow, the long drive home.

History repeats itself - again with the funny balloon hats and odd, if not suggestive dangly thingies infront of the eyes....Maybe it'd have been more effective at a particular chinese buffet??
Have a great, safe trip home!
I guess that answers the age-old question...

Well, now we know, for better or worse.
At least you had some dry weather, even if it was chilly. Safe driving (and flying) to you all as you come back north to where it is getting quite chilly these days - at least it isn't white up here (yet).

Date: 2008-11-19 01:56 pm (UTC)I also tried the Darth Vader and had no idea the Sith were so GRAPEY. :-)
I loved the waitress coming up as I was denying her existence! I couldn't have paid her to come in on cue any better. :-)
And dinner at Sonny's was a blast...thanks very much for buying.
I think I was way too busy singing Bohemian Rhapsody to say thanks as we were leaving.

Date: 2008-11-20 03:42 am (UTC)I think it was named after the Sith Lord because it made the ice almost black. But, I still find it very strange...
