Strange dream of oceans and swords
Feb. 17th, 2018 11:11 amI dream we were doing a sword show somewhere near the ocean where there were big cliffs along the water.
We finished our show and were packing up. The path we had to carry our equipment ran along the edge of the cliff.
At the bottom was a narrow path that had tables with umbrellas and seemed to be some sort of restaurant or bar.
As I leaned over and looked at it, some of the wall crumbled and fell.
"Careful," someone said. "Or you’ll fall."
I looked at the distances. I looked at the water. It was a very clear light blue and I could see fairly deep.
I put down my swords and leapt off of the cliff.
"You’ve just got to leap out far enough!" I shouted as I fell down to the water.
I landed with a big splash.
"Now I’ve got to worry that my iPhone is really as waterproof as it is supposed to be," I said.
I pulled it out and it still worked, so I swam to shore.
I met everyone else near where the cliffs came down to the road. There were lots of hotels and shops there.
Someone I recognized as an author of historical sword fighting books came over to me there.
"That was quite the jump!" he said.
"It looked more dangerous than it was," I said. "I could see the water was plenty deep and I knew I could get out far enough to clear the edge."
"If you’re interested in something that looks dangerous, but isn’t really that bad, why don’t we have a real go with a sword fight."
"My group only does choreographed," I said. "We don’t actually spar."
"But, you jumped off that cliff. Why don’t you give it a go? I promise, nothing to intense."
I thought about it. He was a famous sword fighter and I do shows. But, when would I get the chance again.
"OK," I said. "Let’s do it."
"Great! We’ve got a historical sword fighting conference over in the hotel across the street. Bring your stuff and we’ll have a quick go before you have to hit the road."
I grabbed one of our bags of swords and began wheeling it over to the hotel. This turned out to be harder than expected as I had to go through a small park to do it.
The people in the park seemed to think I had been challenged to a real duel and there was going to be a fight to the death. I did my best to explain their error in that.
I got to the hotel and went into the lobby.
It seemed like his conference was winding down and the folks packing up equipment seemed unhappy they had to put the safety barrier back up.
I fished through my sword bag looking for my favorite sword, but had trouble finding it.
Just as I saw it at the bottom and reached for it, I woke up.
Dream ends
When I woke up, my wife asked it I was going to go back to sleep.
"No!" I said. "If I did that, I’d really have to fight him!"
The hotel seemed to be the same place where the school of practical jokers hung out in my dream at the end of last month.
Although I have met a number of people who have written books on historical sword fighting, I’m not at all sure which one this was supposed to be in my dream.
I was reasonably impressed to meet him.
I guess it isn’t that important.
The place the dream was set seemed nice. Looked like places I’ve seen photos of along the Mediterranean. Never been there, but it looks nice.

Date: 2018-02-17 06:49 pm (UTC)It's interesting how places in our dream pop up several times. I'll have dreams about the same places, but different stuff is happening there.

Date: 2018-02-17 07:14 pm (UTC)One is a hotel. This might or might not be it. Usually I'm in the upper floors where it is open on the inside with a big courtyard.
As I never left the lobby area here, I don't know if it is the same place or not.
The places I dream do change over the years. I used to have a place along a valley between some hills. But, that hasn't shown up in a long, long time.
And, I used to have the mall near where I grew up show up for any mall in a dream. But, not in a while.
