Off to Prince Phillip Island
Jan. 2nd, 2017 09:45 pmToday we decided to drive off to Prince Phillip Island.

It's about 2 hours each way from Melbourne. It's a nice drive.

We drove all the way out to The Nobbies Center at the end:

There were all sorts of signs saying "Parking lot at the Nobbies is full! Park here and take shuttle bus!"
But, each lot we came to was empty. So, we drove to the next one. And, so on.
Eventually we got all the way there.

We had lunch at the center, were disappointed in their shop, but headed off to the boardwalk around the area.

OK, birds nesting so stay on the path? Sure. Poor little birds...
Snakes with no antivenom? You know I'll keep my feet out of that grass!

It was only about 17C/63F spitting rain every so often and VERY windy. So, it wasn't super crowded. But, it was very, very cool.
I took a lot of photos I'm going to post. But, none of them really get across what it is like with the ocean crashing there, birds making their bird noises and the wind whipping around you.
I like that stuff. I was wearing a short sleeve shirt and short pants. Not a lot of others were...
So, I'm sorry if photos can't get the real experience. But, we thought it was great.
Anyhow, here are photos of it...

The cliff is full of little holes. All sorts of birds, including penguins, use these as nesting places.

We decided not to get anything in the gift shop...

(They didn't even have any hats or shirts saying the name of where we were. Just World Wildlife Foundation shirts and hats. I can get those at home...)
As we drove back there were several other overlooks. They didn't have gift shops and centers, but were still cool.

One had a place you could follow the path down to the sea. So, we did.

It was cool to walk right up to the volcanic rock and the edge of the water.

One of the things we noticed up close was some of the "grass" actually looked more like little succulent plants than an actual grass.

And, there were all sorts of interesting things washed up there.

My wife really liked the tide pools.

There were a lot of different shells there too...

In the sand, someone had written my wife's initial and mine in a heart.
That's right someone (not saying it was me) defaced all of Australia for his wife...

We found another overlook point near a navigation light.

No way down there, but it was out of the wind enough I could put the camera down on time and get a photo of us together...

Then, back across the bridge to the mainland.

Again, an interesting view driving back.

For the first time ever I found my way back to the building without Google maps.

We leave for New Zealand tomorrow...
