The Peabody Essex Museum

I don’t like Salem. I just don’t. My family moved away from there a generation before the witch trials and we’ve never wanted to back. Not, mind you that I’m big on the swamp to which they moved either. That’s why I live on a hill more than an hour from either place. But, I digress…
The one thing I do like in Salem, and will drive to go see is the Peabody Essex Museum. (http://www.pem.org )

We got there early enough that it wasn’t crowded.

The first exhibit was on the Asia-Dutch trade of a few centuries ago.

They didn’t skimp on the down side of that story for the folks in Asia either. But, the PEM doesn’t. That’s one of the things I like about them.

I did like that an exhibit that involves a lot of the spice trade had a spicy start. At the entrance they put big tubes of spices that were open on top so the exhibit smelled like them.

Sadly, no photos in the actual exhibit.
It was interesting that the exhibit was co-organized with the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. That’s one of the places I’d love to take my wife some day.
I only was there for one day and want to go back too: http://fbhjr.livejournal.com/798034.html
Then we went over to see the other exhibit I had wanted to see: http://pem.org/exhibitions/193-intersections
This one did allow photos!

It totally fills the room.

And, as you walk through the light and shadows, you become part of it too.

We did poke around more of the museum too.

We saw Godzilla there…

Actually it is an exhibit on scale that they have things you can make interesting photos with.

My wife liked the miniature origami.

This was cool, but I have no idea what it was called.

We had lunch there too.
The sandwich was good, but I don’t think I’ll order the cucumber lemonade again.

They had some strange stuff in the gift shop. Like china of more than one style. Per piece.

Didn’t get any of that…
And, benches. Wouldn’t be an art museum without benches.

I’m glad we got to see those exhibits. They were very interesting!
