I thought if we were in the area, we should see that henge everyone is on about.

Honestly, we have seen standing stones before on trips to Ireland. Not as big. And, certainly not as famous. But, ones you can actually walk around and touch.

But, Stonehenge.
And, we were going to drive by it anyhow.

The roads there are a bit bigger than those to the horse.

We were impressed by houses that still have thatched roofs.

You drive along, come over a hill and there it is.

It is a bit of a traffic hazard as folks say "Look! Stonehenge!" stop for photos and get in car accidents. So, I did not slow down.

Since I was there last year they have finished their huts.

I had a fairly detailed conversation with one of the folks who works there about the thatch roofs. They have no idea what was used 4000 years ago for weave. So, they display a bunch of them hoping one is right.

But, the stones…

There were a series of passing rain clouds that could make it look very dramatic.

It did make it a bit damp walking around it.

How dramatic it looked depends totally on if you set your light level for the sky or the ground.

It’s my wife!

Look! Questions to which no one knows the answers!

I think this stone was looking at me…

It is out in the open. No doubt about that…

Look! Other rocks!

We thought it was windy. We didn’t know what was in store for the next two days. But, it was still blustery.

Look! It’s me!

So, we walked the circle around the rocks.

Look! Sheep!

One of these days I’m going to go look at the other things near there…

I did look at the "axis" for the sunrise. But, we were almost a month off.

My wife was the most excited to see how they hold their ropes in place. She totally wants to use this design to hold our sword fighting safety ropes.

Sometimes the sun came out.

It lit things up a bit better.

It made me see the moss on the rocks.

There were lots of crows that were very hopeful of tourist food.

We found the tram drivers feed them…

There is one point where the rocks look artificial. We both got photos of that.

But, we could see the sun wasn’t going to last and another storm was coming in.

So, back to the car and then off.

(Yes, of course we stopped at the shop…)

It is a bit disappointing you can't walk near the stones. If you ever get back go to nearby Avebury. They have a whole bunch of stones you can walk around. It's quite pretty.

I really would like to spend some time in that area as I know there is a lot to see.
But, that would be a different trip.

Lovely photos! I had wondered how close you could get. And I love the scowling stone.

You can't get all that close. We were lucky in that there were very few folks there.
When I was last there several buses had dropped off people and it was much harder to get close.

Those are called pigtail standards and in New Zealand they're used to support the electric tape for breakfeeding cattle. I'd be very surprised if they weren't available at agricultural suppliers in the US.

I'm sure we can find some here.
And, pigtail seems like a good name for them...

I loved the thatched roofs - I saw an Episode of Grand Designs UK where they showed how they did it.

I have been to Stonehenge ... it was much smaller than I imagined. We couldn't go near it either.

Lovely photos of Stone Henge. That is quite the dramatic view from the road, I can understand the tourist car wrecks.
