Godkids visit day 7
Aug. 16th, 2015 02:32 pmWe got up pretty early, packed things up, folded up inflatable beds to get going before 7AM.

This was all in an attempt to beat traffic into New York City to get there before 10AM.
Yeah…

But, just about 10 we did cross the bridge over the Harlem River onto the island of Manhattan.

So, not too late.
Then, down along the river to where we were going.

So, we got to the museum only about 20 minutes late.

Their dad had told us the night before he was going to be late. So, there really wasn’t much of a rush. We just like to get there before it gets too crowded.
You know, before the benches fill up.

Our Godson is at the age when he gravitates towards the only non-naked statue in the Greek wing.

There was some special exhibit on Chinese inspired fashion going on. It took up sections of the museum usually dedicated to other things.

It included things like this hat.

I thought our Goddaughter would like it, but she didn’t.
She did like the deer encased in glass. I’ve always thought it creepy, but my wife likes it.

The Japanese wing in NYC is much more traditional and formal than the other two museums we went to this week.

I did like the new things on how the Japanese pictured Americans 150 years ago.

I’ve always liked this place to sit.

I tried to pass on the "sit here in peaceful contemplation". But, other chairs beaconed.

We did see a few woodcut prints from the same person as in Boston, but nowhere near as many.

I assure you, she is trying to make the face that goes with that helmet.

So, then it was "what do we see next?"

That most Holy Grail?

Nope.
My wife’s favorite thing?

Nope.
Oh yeah, armor and swords.

Don’t know where they get that from…
We had a long discussion on why gold plated armor is better than just gold armor.

Our Godson tried to convince me that if it was pure gold, the intimidation factor would be enough. I refused to back off gold plated steel being better.
He did not accept this sword as a reasonable weapon.

"Pearl handle?" he asked. "What good is that? It would break when you swung it!"

We both agreed we would not want to fight this person.

And, he seemed to be impressed by the armor that was in use from 1500 to 1936.

Once through that, there was again that "what next" question.

The Egyptian temple?

Eh. Didn’t hold them long.

Lunch?

Yeah, that got them.

It was a warm, but very nice, day in NYC.

Before that lunch I had not realized some birds were optimized for maple trees.

A bad shot of throwing a bottle towards a recycle bin and getting in the trash led to our Godson needing to fix the error.

Then, back to the museum.

European paintings?

Maybe no so much.
Involve monsters and saints of German mercenaries?

Then, there seemed to be more interest.
There also seemed to be a lot of interest in historical facial hair.

This one in particular.

I did notice our Goddaughter more interested in paintings.

And, our Godson more interested in sculpture.

Not sure how strong that preference is on either side. But, it was a pretty clear trend yesterday.

About that time their dad called to say he couldn’t get into NYC at all, and could we meet him somewhere else?

We did go look at the African and Oceania stuff after that. I had been holding that off for when their dad got there as that is what he wanted to see in Boston. But, it was not to be.

This ceiling made a big impression on both of them.

Then, off to meet their parents.

It was still a great, if hot, day.

Sadly, we did not know that a miscommunication about which rest area we’d meet resulted in their parents coming across the GW bridge about the time we went under it.

So, we continued north over the Tappan Zee bridge.

With all the traffic involved.

But, at least the kids enjoyed the ride.

About the time we made it over the bridge, we found their parents were behind us on the other side.

But, as they were going north to Canada, we continued north to the rest area I had first intended.

There, the kids intrepid dog, Louie, found them.

(Yes, their parents did bring Louie. But, I didn’t get a photo of their parents.)
We said our goodbyes. We headed east and they headed north.
We crossed over the Hudson on a different bridge with less traffic.

Then through a pretty party of New York State and into Connecticut.

We followed this truck for about 2 hours. There was a lot of speculation about those things in the back. We still have no idea.

As we got closer to home, an almost perfect textbook example of a thunderstorm appeared over the horizon.

We skirted the edge of the storm and stopped for Thai food.

We got home before the storm.

But as we ate our Thai food the lightning got so bad we turned off the electronics to make sure they didn’t get zapped.
So, that’s why I’m posting all this today…

And what's this?
That armour that was in use until 1936! What's the story behind that?
