I’ve got 4262 songs loaded on my iDevices of which I listen to 1427 frequently.
I have a lot of soundtracks, symphonies, holiday music and such that I only listed to if I’m in the mood for them, which is why there is so much not on my normal listen to list.

Over the last month or so, I’ve decided to listen to all of it alphabetically by song title.
It has been very interesting as things not normally together end up together. And, you get to realize that there are certain themes and frequent words that start songs.

One of the things that struck me was the distribution of letters. The way iDevices sort it, they don’t count words like “the” or such in the title. So “The overture” would be under O for “overture”, not T for “the”.
This gave the following distribution of letters.

Yes, there are a few letters that aren’t very well represented. But, over all it was more even than I expected.

If you do go just by the letters, not the first main word, you get this:

Not really that different except for “the” is now dominant.

I also went through and looked for the places where the same word is used a lot. This is a list of all the words used more than 10 times on my song list.

You can see the number one word is “I”.
Wow. I had not realized I was that self centered.

To make it seem less centered on me, all I have to do is throw “the” back into it.
It puts all the others to shame.

You ability to turn anything into a statistic amazes me.

It is just because I said "It seems to be taking a long time to get through the 'i' songs, I wonder how many there are?"

Very interesting - I wonder what words would come up commonly in my music library...

Hehe ... interesting.
I always thought engineers didn't like numbers ... only controllers did! ;-)

This post has given me the urge to pirate SPSS and crunch some numbers.

I think the preponderance of "I" means that singers and/or songwriters are self-obsessed.
