Yesterday’s practice
Jun. 30th, 2014 07:03 pmFor our first practice of summer it was a nice sunny day, but some of the flowers were still out.

Although several of our less frequent members had told me this was the practice they were going to make, only two others actually were able to make it.

One of whom is our member that spent the last 10 months in Africa.
He’s already done a weekend of performance since he’s been back, so I can’t say he "needs" to work on things as he has remembered a remarkable amount over that time.
But, it doesn’t hurt to remind him of things.

When doing the longsword he came up with such a good idea that I had to go check the book on a maneuver I’ve been doing in shows for a dozen years to see if his idea fit the text better.

It didn’t, but was still a good idea that works in other areas.
And, he does seem to like the long sword.

No, really.

We also reviewed the dusack with him.

Again, given the length of his absence, he remembered it quite well.
My wife and I also worked on the German dagger techniques.

Then John wanted to write a fight. So, we did some "free form" sword work with the sabers. We didn’t go too fast or really try and hit each other.

You know, he’s 31 years younger than me and quite fast…

And, far more maneuverable than I am.

But, I am meaner.

(That’s my sword going around my back to hit his back while he thinks he has me…)
He has some great insights into it that not all do.
"You don’t have to look at my sword if you’re pushing it away as you can tell position and speed by the feel of it as you do it!" he said. "You can be looking into my eyes to see what I’m going to be doing next!"
"You’d be amazed how some folks never understand that," I replied.
It was a lot of fun.
But, I came home very tired from it.
31 years younger than me…

But, there are summer flowers and even fall flowers.
So, not unknown, but we are past the peak for most plants.
