Dead zone

I do not have nerve endings in my fingertips. Just the very ends. Not the
pads where the fingerprints are, those feel things just fine.
My brother is the same way. It is one of those weird genetic things.

I bring it up as today I was trimming something with a sharp knife and saw
something fall to the mat.
“That’s some of my finger,” I thought.
It was. Not much. Not even enough to bleed very much.
It is certainly better than the times I get burned for picking up things I
can’t tell are hot.

But, there are times I really wish I was wired more towards human nominal.
Perhaps it is an advantage. I kept making a straight cut. Maybe if I felt
the pain I would have jerked the knife?
Don’t know. That’s the only plus I can think of for it.

That must be quite a concern - and with burns or extreme cold. You could do serious damage and not even realise it. So you're finger is ok after cutting some off?

No worries. It was a very shallow cut. I've already taken of the bandage and it is fine. The real disconcerting bit was watching a bit of skin fall off and not feel anything. Didn't like that.

But, you're right, I do have to watch out. I've burned my fingers more times than I can count and not known it until it was too late.

That would be weird to see it fall off and not feel it - very weird.
