Hats & Tapestries
Nov. 17th, 2012 05:02 pmThis morning my wife and I headed out to Salem. I stopped at work on the way to drop off a file that needed to be on the server by Monday morning.

My boss found out I was at work and called to thank me. I think he spent more time thanking me than it took to drop off the file.
Then, off to Salem.

I don’t like Salem much. My family moved out about 50 years before the famous witch trials and have never been big on going back.
But, the Peabody Essex Museum is there, and my wife and I both like that very much. So, as long it isn’t near Halloween, we will got to Salem to see the museum.
They are having a special exhibit on hats.

Sadly, no photos allowed in the exhibit. I hadn’t expected to like it to be honest. I like hats, but didn’t think looking at them would be interesting. But, it was actually very interesting.
And, you can take photos in the corridor between sections where you are allowed to try on some hats.

The exhibit we really came to see was the one with the tapestries.
Again, no photos. Sad.
It was interesting. I’ve seen photos of these tapestries before. But, seeing them in person makes quite a difference. My wife and I both agreed that they seem to convey something in person that is lost in photos. Don’t know if it is the size in person, the color, or something else.
But, it was certainly worth the trip.
Then we moved on to the regular exhibits where photos are allowed.

Of course, there are benches!

The museum has a lot of ivory. I feel bad for the elephants, but think the carving is cool.

They also had a special exhibit on fish, silk, tea and bamboo.

I might be more tempted to have fish if the bowls for them still looked like this.

Then, we went out of the museum and off to get lunch.
Unlike last time there were no wandering reenactors in the grave yard. We think this might have been the only trip to Salem without seeing any.

No one at the witch trial memories either.

On the way home we stopped and bought a turkey for next Thursday.
All in all, a pretty good day.
