This is in answer to the frozendoll meme I started earlier.

#10) What you look for in a partner
I’m not sure of the scope of this question, so I will pick my own.
If you’re talking life partner/spouse I’m looking for my wife.  And the
things that attracted me to her immediately are still the things that do
now: Intelligence,
talent,  competency & sense of humor.

I never expect to find such a perfect match for me on those three traits,
so very long ago stopped looking for them in that capacity.

However, there are still other kinds of partner.
For our sword performances, everyone I work with is a partner.
For any of the games I run, the players are partners in it with me.
Any conversation I have (in person or on line) the other people are
partners.

Of course my list of what I look for in those sorts of partners is the
same.  Not always the same mix as what I looked for in my wife.  But, not
that different as my wife does all those other things with me too.

One thing I think worth pointing out, skill is not on the list.
I do admire skill and won’t say otherwise.
But, it isn’t something that I often go out searching for in a partner.
For an instructor, sure.  Skill is very important if I’m after someone to
teach me.
But, for a partner I’ll take the competency.  To me if you’ve got that, you
can learn the skill.
And, if we’re partners, it isn’t a bad thing to practice together and build
the skill set together.

But, that’s me.  Not everyone feels the same.


The upshot of this is what I look for in a partner is what my wife has.  I
have never had a better partner than her and am very happy she has been
partnering with me for so long.

The day I met A I knew we were meant to be together. She was smart, funny, sweet, and knock-your-socks-off gorgeous! I'd have guessed she was too good for me, but I have never had an ego problem :-)
