#4) Your childhood fears
I don’t remember being afraid of much out of the ordinary when young. I was afraid of the dark, of getting lost, of monsters living in the woods. But, I remember most of my friends sharing those fears to a greater or lesser extent.
After kindergarten the biggest fear I can remember is that I would be held back a grade in school. I had several friends who were held back in kindergarten. It had been very carefully explained to me that I had only just made it through.
My brother was also kept back in kindergarten and it was very clear that my family considered this a massive failure.
So, the last day of school I always dreaded getting that report card. There was always a blank space at the bottom saying “grade next year” and I was always terrified that it would not say the next number.
It always did have the next number.
This ties into what I wrote about last year concerning my learning disabilities and how they were viewed.
The fear that someone would say “wait, he’s just faking it” and keep me back or send me back.
I can’t say I’ve totally put it behind me.
