When I bought my car in March it had XM radio installed. There was a 30 day trial, then you had to pay for it.

For the most part, I listen to my iPod. But, once in a while I’d try the radio. The XM didn’t seem any better than the regular radio. OK, no “commercials” but after every song there was the “We’re XM radio!” bit that was as much a commercial as I’ve ever heard. There was no greater chance of finding a song I liked on there as there was on the 6 regular stations I have programed into the car.

So, at the end of the month, I didn’t sign up. It was shut off.
They called me and asked me to subscribe. I said no.

Today, 4 months later, I get another call from them asking me to subscribe.
“No,” I said. “I didn’t find it any better than regular radio.”
“How can you say that?!?” the woman demanded. “It’s clearly better! Hundreds of stations! Commercial free! No static!”
“I only listen to one at a time, you give promos all the time and the radio cuts out when I go under a bridge,” I replied.
“Well, with us it displays what song is playing!”
“I shouldn’t look at that when driving, and most of the Boston stations are digital now and do the same. And, they don’t cut out under bridges.”
“But, ours is so much better! You can’t say ours is worse!”
“Sorry, but I don’t find it any better than the free stations, so I’m not going to pay for it.”
“You can’t say that! We’re much better! I’d certainly want static free radio even if it cut out for a couple of seconds under a bridge!”
“Then I hope you subscribe as it seems the right thing for you. I will not be buying it. I’m going to hang up now. Have a good night.”
As I lowered the phone to hit the end call button I could hear she was still telling me I was wrong and really wanted the service.

Maybe that works for some people. But, it is not the way to sell something to me.

I suspect she was used to people saying "Oh, I didn't know it ran out" or "I didn't know I had that installed" or something similar.

I tried it. I found it wanting. I won't pay for it.
She honestly didn't seem to know what to say to that.

I've had telephone soliciters argue with me that they were not "bothering" me with their call because the call was legal. We stopped donating to the organizations and told them why. By letter.

What- they thought I'd say "Oh1 You explained it so well! I can see I was NOT bothered or annoyed by your attitude, and will give you $$$!"???? because I bet that doesn't happen ever.

I...Wow.

*head desk*

The few times I've had the chance to listen to XM (we got it for my Dad a few years ago)
I came up with the same general conclusion.

Not -much- different than Radio, but it cuts out under bridges, tunnels and sometimes really rainy days.
While I did like the specific variety (I happened to like the 40's - 80's specific stations), it's not enough to make
me subscribe.
