I’ve got a fan in CT?
Mar. 31st, 2008 10:18 amEvery summer for the last 4 years we’ve done fire shows at the Southern
Connecticut Ren faire. We’re usually the last act of the day, so our show
doesn’t end until 10PM. Then, it’s a 2 hour drive home. Once we’re done
packing up and all, there aren’t a lot of places left open. And, I’m
usually hungry and always thirsty. And, often need gas for the drive home.
So, the first rest area on the highway has gas, drinks and a fairly good
candy selection. I stop there after almost every show. More than half the
time other folks from the troupe do as well.
After a while, the young woman who works there asked why these strange
people in costumes were coming into her convenience store Friday and
Saturday nights in July.
We told her about the fire shows and suggested that she go to one. (I
don’t think she ever did.)
Driving home from NYC last night we took the same highway. I needed gas.
I was hungry and thirsty. So, we stopped. I had suggested stopping at one
of the other rest areas we came to before that, but my wife said “go to the
regular one and see if they recognize you.”
I didn’t think she would as it’s not the summer, I’ve cut my hair, and I
wasn’t in costume.
So I went in. The young woman was there behind the counter. As I picked
up some drinks, she looked over at me with a slightly confused look. When
I came to the register she said “Aren’t you….” Then stopped and rang up my
drinks.
Finally, when I paid her she said “I think I know you, but you’ve changed
your hair.”
“I’m usually here in the summer,” I said.
“You do those fire shows!” she said. “Are you doing one now?”
“No,” I said. “Just driving home from New York.”
“You do shows there?”
“No, just visiting museums,” I said.
“Oh, well stop by again when you’re doing the shows this summer!”
It was very strange. But, I guess it’s a good thing. I didn’t tell her
I’m not sure we’re doing those shows this year. But, I’m sure I’ll travel
route 15 again. I don't seem to be able to avoid it, or Connecticut in general...
