Each year our church has a Tenebrae service on Maundy Thursday. As they do
the readings they put out the lights in the church until it is dark, then
everyone leaves.
I’ve always felt more resonance to that then with people who seem to
celebrate the story of someone being tortured to death. It’s a dark thing.
I had an admiration for the planning of our pastor during the service. It
can be a challenge to do the readings as it gets darker and darker in the
church. So, she had our member who is blind do the last ones. He’s using
Braille anyhow, right?
So, she’s learned to use the strengths of the congregation.
I was also very happy my wife went to the service with me. It’s the first
time she’s gone to church with me since last August. She said she went
because I asked. Hopefully it wasn’t too bad for her.

Our services in the Roman-Catholic church back home were very similar to this - service ended without singing, just silence, and only enough illumination for people to see well enough to get out. It is a thought-provoking moment
and makes things seem only more brilliant on Easter Sunday when the priests would come out sporting their flashy pink vestments. Though, several of our priests would also wear pink for other reasons. ;-) They did an incredible job of redecorating the church while there, seriously !!
