Ladyhawke and I did this sort of thing when we got to go see the King Tut exhibit in Philly a few years ago, she found an amazing package deal online for plane and hotel, for an amazing price. We flew down Friday and then back Sunday.
(this was better experience than the trip I booked to go see the Dali retrospective also in Philly, but it was on a bus, which sucked because we got caught on 95 both ways...I bet it was faster to sit on the tarmac in takeoff queue at Philly airport on Sunday evening, but the pilot "convinced" Boston to fly a with a tailwind and a little faster to land on-time; than it was sitting on a cramped bus on 95 and 2 hours late but I digress)
We felt totally Jet-Set and it was a lot of fun! So, I say DO EEET!! And if you can squeeze in the surprise visit, All the better, I'm sure they'd be thrilled. I agree with the consensus, you have the ability to have a "just us two grownup trip" card to use.
