Siri-ously

Driving home last night I was trying the voice control on my new iPhone,
Siri.
It started when my wife texted me. I said to the phone “read message” and
it did.
Then, it asked “do you want to reply?”
So as I drove home in the rain that was getting constantly more solid I had
it send messages for me based on what I said, and read the messages that
came back.
It worked pretty well.
It got a couple of words wrong, but only a couple. Most times on a
cellphone I’ve got to ask people to repeat something once in a while too.
The hardest part was the actual commands. Waiting for the right beep to be
sure it is ready for what I’m saying, but before the beep to say it’s done
waiting is tricky when you’d going through the hands free ear bud.
As I’ve seen on some of the review sites for the iPhone, this is more a
question of training me to use it correctly than a failure of the phone.
I’ve got to say, it is getting to be just a bit Star Trek that I can have
my phone write down what I say as I drive along.
But, none of the text messages to my wife were “Captain’s log: I have
turned west on route 9 and run into unusually high traffic. I blame the
Klingons.”
