The end of Ireland
Oct. 3rd, 2011 09:09 pmTo end our first trip to Ireland, we went up to the Limerick area. It is right near Shannon airport where the flight home was from and there was a lot of cool stuff there.
We spent a day in the city, mostly in the castle there. I remember it because the parking garage attendant there was very impolite.
We tried to see the Hunt museum, but it was closed. Even to those of us with the same last name. (Every time we told people our last name they started talking about how to find our many relatives that must still be around. But, I know that side of the family is not from Ireland, so we didn’t bother.
We went to a living history museum that was open, but all of their interpreters had quit for the season. So, we could wander around recreations of historical buildings, but there was no one to tell us about them. Sad.
So, we headed off to the Cliffs of Moher, sure that they wouldn’t be closed.

They are very impressive.

We waited for quite some time to get a photo of these fools falling off the cliff by going over the barrier, but they never fell.

It is a long way down.

We stayed on the correct side of the barrier.

We saw a tower at the end of the cliffs and thought we would walk down for a closer look.

The path was not totally tourist friendly. But, there was a path, so we kept going.

But, after several stone walls and two electric fences, the tower seemed no closer, so we gave up.

So, we went over to the Burren.

It’s an area scrapped clean by the glaciers long ago that never totally regrew.
It’s got some interesting graves from thousands of years ago.

Our last day we drove off to Birr castle.

It is privately owned, so you can’t go in the castle, but you can wander the grounds.

It is known as having the tallest hedge in the world.

It is very tall. They also have a big telescope, but it was being restored, so we didn’t see it.
It was a nice place to see.

That night we went to Bunratty castle for their feast.

A couple we met there had arrived on the same plane as we had, and were flying back the next day like we were.
It rained on us every day we were there. Sometimes a little. Some times a lot. But, every day.
They said it had been clear and sunny the whole time.
Strange.
It is a nice feast, and better than the medieval feasts back in the states.

The next morning we went to Shannon Airport where the gift store had everything we had seen for sale for the previous two weeks.
It had been a good trip, but we were tired.
