My boss is sending me to visit a supplier next week.
It's 800 miles away and I need to spend a whole day there.
But, I can't spend the day before traveling because he "needs me in the office too much to have me out 2 days".
I guess that's good.
But, it means I've got to work one morning, drive to Logan, get there at 9 at night, spend all the next day there, and fly back to get home (hopefully) before midnight and go to work the next day.
It's good to be wanted. Right?
It is. But, it is also tiring.

He should get you a limo so you can relax and sleep on the way home from the airport. =)

That's unreasonable.

You are expected to put in 8-10 hours/day for work.

Travel during your sup[posed off-time is a huge imposition, and one they should be paying for.

Personally, I think ALL biz travel needs to be done during biz hours and so the company that requires it is paying for it. Plus they need to pay for all incidental expenses like shelter and food.

Transferring that to their employees by making it an off-clock activity is NOT fair. I admit it's common, but it's a rip-off.

I totally agree with Cissa.

You should be willing to put your foot down and set some limits.

You won't be 100% effective if you are not able to get adequate rest and sleep

I realize you are all under pressure, you want to do good and be seen as reliable and "the go-to guy", et cetera, but you won't
look that way when you are nodding off at work the next day after 24 straight hours of travel (I figure 'all said and done')

If you know yourself you were not 100% when you were getting hit heavy and hard with allergies earlier this year - not getting sleep and not having time to re-charge / de-compress yourself would be like going through allergy-hell again.

Spending at day at a supplier inspecting their parts doesn't really count as traveling. So, i'll travel on evening and the next, not straight for 24 hours.

And, when I was put in charge of my department it was clearly said that making this sort of trip would be part of that job, so I'm not at all sure what you want me to put my foot down about. I like the promotion and raise. I'm willing to do some travel for it.

What I really wanted was to spend some more time of the road so I would have time to sneak off to my friends that only live 2 hours from there. I'm sad that my boss says I'm so needed I can't afford to do that. But, it is hard to argue too much that I should get to visit my friends on company time.

My boss was very specific when he gave me the promotion and big raise that this thing would be required once in a while.
And, it isn't every week or anything like that.

I would be nice if all the travel took place during the day, but that just isn't the way it works.
And, it could be worse. If they made it a day trip it would be out at 5AM and back at 11PM for the same amount of time on site. That my boss said was unfair and I should get more sleep by flying the evening before.
