[livejournal.com profile] perrin_o_ravnos really should have been there...

We didn’t get home from the show last night until almost midnight.
Then, we stayed up and made cookies for today.
So, we got to sleep about 2:30 or so.

We got up at 8, showered and headed off to Salem.
When we got there, all sorts of military folks were there in front of the parking garage. We also saw all sorts of historical re-enactors as well.

“I’m surprised [livejournal.com profile] palusbuteo isn’t here,” I said.
“There he is,” my wife said, pointing.

Yep, there were the Zouaves with their 18 foot pikes.

“I’m glad we don’t have to do any historical reenacting today while standing around in the snow and the wind,” my wife said.
We went into the museum.

The Peabody Essex Museum has a special exhibit on a Dutch Masterworks collection

(That is a 2 1/2 story sign for it if that isn’t clear...)

The exhibit is VERY good. They have magnifying glasses and let you get pretty close to the paintings so you can really look at all of the details in there.
It is just the sort of thing I think [livejournal.com profile] perrin_o_ravnos would really like.
But, no photos.
I did buy the very large book on the exhibit. (Member’s discounts are great...)

After that special exhibit we did spend some time roaming the rest of the museum. I was surprised to find proof of flying saucers in the Japanese kimono clasp section.

Of course, since it is an art museum, I had to take photos of the benches.

My wife really liked this vase.

We hadn’t really planned to go on “India day”. But, we did.
They had special India based activities and tours.

“India TV” was there making live broadcasts.
It was the most people I’ve seen there at any one time.
So, when various traditional Indian dances broke out and a huge crowd gathered to watch it, we skipped out.

(Just in case there is any doubt, it is the crowd we wanted to avoid. Not the dancing.)

We drove from there up to Tom’s where he and Brett were having their purple house party.

We had not worn anything purple so had to sit in another room with other people who didn’t wear purple while Tom guarded us.

My wife made a brave escape attempt and got as far as the fire place room with her iPad before being discovered.

It was a nice enough time. But, between lack of sleep, a busy day and the fur from their cats, we headed home fairly early.
Still it was a good day.

Brett told me you guys were in Salem and saw us, and that you waved. I hope I waved back?! I had no idea you guys were there.

Yeah, the wind was really the problem, those are 16.5' pikes, by the way, and they are trouble with heavy wind. Turning onto Washington street, which is around the corner on the right of the photo of us, a sudden burst of wind (we estimated 30 mph) came at us and almost literally blew some of us over, Esspecially the ones with large flags, I had trouble keeping traction while walking, even thought they are leather-soled shoes. It was very surprising.

We haven't figured out what the [curse?] is yet, but we always have problems with high winds and wacky weather doing this event.

(the event is the Salem Muster, celebrating the 'birth' of the Massachusetts National Guard, which organized Regiments right there on the same Salem Common in 1637, which is what we were dressed to represent. :D)

One of the speakers at the ceremony where you saw us, he mentioned the near 400 year history, and the "Ghosts" that are of that legacy...So I have to wonder which former commander or whoever of the original unit we portray is taking it out on us.

I'm really glad you had a good time at the exhibit. Had we not been asked to do a special movie shoot for the Nat'l Guard, [I] was very tempted to sneak into the exhibit, but I don't think they'd allow me in 17th century clothing, let alone a sword. :( I am reaaaaly hoping to see this exhibit soon.

I did end up going to the party, but only stayed for an hour, I felt very exhausted after some food and resting. :/
