I like Chinese food. There are very few places to eat near where I work.
So, I often go to the Chinese place down the road. Only about ¼ of the
time do they give me a fortune cookie when I’m there. I keep the ones I
get and every so often clean out my pile of them.
I used to do this at the last place I worked too. But, 3 days before they
laid me off and I spent 27 ½ weeks unemployed I got: Your efforts will
result in much profit.
I guess you could take a long term view and say that’s true as the job I’ve
got now pays more then that old job. But, I think that’s giving the cookie
an awful lot of stretch in its prediction. If it has said: “Your failure
to be a yes man will soon have consequences”, I’d have a lot more faith in
the cookies.
But, they’re there, I read them. This is what the latest batch has to say:
1) A short vacation is in order for you
2) There is no time like the pleasant
3) Act always in a way to do good
4) A friend will bring you a big surprise soon
5) In order to capture a city, first capture the heart of the people
6) Small steps you take will ultimately bring you great fortune
7) To do nothing is to be nothing
8) A friend asks only for your time and not money
9) In music, one must think with his heart and feel with his brain
10) Pennies from heaven find their way to your doorstep this year
11) Success I getting up just one more time then you fall down
12) Catch on fire with enthusiasm and people will come for miles to watch
you burn
(That last one comes from the Chinese place in NJ where we ate while
performing at the Paladin Faire last month. But, I’ve been carrying it
around and should let it out.)
4, 5 & 6 seem to have a theme going that I can’t say makes me totally
comfortable.
We’ll see how it goes…
