Dream country

Today my cousin was returning to Florida.
So, I dodged trains and went to get her.


We had a couple of hours until her plane left and I asked her if there was anything else in the Boston area she wanted to see.
“Trees,” she said.

Not overly far from where I grew up is the Blue Hill Reservation. The ski area on the side of it is where I used to ski in the early 70’s before I gave it up. (When your ski instructor is run over by a train while skiing, it’s time to give it up.)

There is a small road that runs through the park on the side of the hill and there is a very nice stopping point where you can look out at Boston.

It is a very nice view of the city.


I had some trouble getting there. Not because the park had changed. It’s almost exactly as I remember it. (That is strange on its own.) But, all the areas around it are very different. There used to be a lot of old mansions. Now, there are old mansions and a lot of merely very expensive houses as well. The upshot is it took me a couple of tries to find the right road to get on the park road, but we did.


There is a stone stairway that leads up to a watch tower near the top of the hill.


Although not a super long path by the time you’re at the top the cars are hard to see.


And, there are a lot of trees, which seemed to meet my cousin’s needs.

Sadly, the tower is no longer open to the public.

I think it might be closed because of this Sam person, but I’m not sure. He is certainly fond of the place.


One of the strange things about this park is it is a place I go in my dreams. Almost every dream I have that is set out doors is in this park. Usually the valley just east of the tower. Some major construction is going on there now, which feels strange. Bulldozers are moving my dream locations around. Very strange.
It has been 20 years since I last went up there. I’m glad I thought of it as it’s a cool place.
