Glass starships

Season two of Star Trek Discovery became available for me to watch on my birthday. As I’ve been a fan of Star Trek since the original show was on the air in the 60’s I thought that was a very nice birthday present.
But, things bother me about the show. And, watching the last episode of the season last night REALLY bothered me a lot.
I’m going to talk about it a bit. I’ll try not to give major spoilers, but there will be at least some spoilers.
I like the show. I like the characters. But, some of the things they just do are so over the top stupid that it makes me crazy.
While annoying to have characters give speeches and long goodbyes while there is a clock literally counting down the very short amount of time they have behind them, that a dramatic thing that many shows do.
Things like “how did they all get back on the ship when the shields were up?” are confusing and don’t even get a throw away line in the script. But, in the end aren’t really important. Apparently 400 people can jump between ships in a commercial break.
Why in space they say they have something surrounded when they’re in a ring around something shows they don’t know you can go up and down in space, but they certainly aren’t the only show to think space is flat.
The one that really got me was near the end.
There is a big bomb that’s going to explode and take out a ship. They can’t do anything about this because they can’t close the door between the bomb and the rest of the ship.
They have less than 5 minutes to disarm it, so the captain walks (not runs) to where it is to do it himself. He tries for about 10 seconds then gives up.
It ends up with the door being closed and him looking into the room with the bomb through the window in the door.
The bomb goes off and he has to squint against the glare as he watches it explode through the window.

The explosion is seen from one of the other ships, and the fire ball blocks out the whole ship.

The bomb blows a huge hole in the ship at the front on the right.

But, about 3 meters away from the blast behind that window the captain assures them that they’re OK.
Why don’t they make the whole ship out of that window material?
It can withstand a nuclear level explosion from an arms length away. People behind it only need some sunglasses due to the light.
