Brakes break
Jul. 4th, 2019 08:43 pmLast week my car was making a strange sound. I didn’t like it. It sounded like the brakes.
Friday afternoon, my wife dropped off the car. They called me to tell me the brakes were certainly shot and needed to be replaced.
I guess they were the original ones from when I bought the car 7 years ago. They seemed to think that was a long time not to replace breaks.
Saturday morning I got it back after paying a mere $1400…
I had hoped for less.
Sunday to practice we drove my wife’s car.
Monday my car still sounded a bit funny.
Monday night, I drove into Worcester to get my hair cut. Going into Worcester there is a big hill.
I stopped at the traffic light near the top. As I know it’s a long light, I looked down at my radio to try and get a better song playing.
The car behind me started to beep a lot. I looked up, the light was still red. I looked back at him in my mirror and saw him getting very close and still beeping.
"What’s that fool doing?" I asked as I watched the bumper of the much bigger SUV getting very close to my little Prius.
There was a crunch.
I put the car in park and got out.
"Why did you roll backwards into me!?!" he shouted.
I looked. There was a LOT of room between my car and the one in front of me.
"But, I just got these brakes fixed…" I said.
"Light’s green!" he said, pointing up to the light.
I jumped back in and drove through the light. On the other side we checked and there was no visible damage to either car.
Tuesday I dropped the car off at the garage again and explained how I thought my paying $1400 to fix my brakes would mean I wouldn’t roll backwards on hills.
They fixed it.
They tell me it was the struts. They were bent, so the brakes were not applying the force they should be.
They did not charge me for the struts or labor to put them in.
But, they also did not say how they got bent or why it wasn’t noticed when they were doing the work.
But, at least I’ve got my car back. Hopefully it will work…
