It is indeed a skunk. They are fairly common in the area where we live. There used to be a family of them in our courtyard, but the maintenance men chased them off.
The spray they give out is pretty bad. I've never been hit with it directly. But, sadly a lot of them are run over on the roads and release it. So, it is not unusual to drive through a cloud of it.
I've always liked them. Many years ago when I worked at the natural history museum I used one in the animal shows I did. I had been told that it had been de-scented. I used it every week for more than a year. Never had a problem. When it died of old age they examined it and found it had not been de-scented after all. It was just mellow and knew I wasn't going to let the kids hurt it.
