15 years

It was 15 years ago today that my wife talked me into going off and meeting
with the group that one of the volunteers where she worked was in that did
sword fighting.
As I’ve written about before (http://www.fbhjr.livejournal.com/326282.html
) I was reluctant to go and my wife had to do a lot of convincing me to go.

But, I joined. And, for the last 15 years have been performing sword
fights in public.

Of course, my performing in public goes back almost 44 years now to when I
started playing violin for people back in 1971. Then signing for people in
75 & 76. Acting some until I graduated school.
And, marching in parades and such with historical groups.

I have, of course, rendered this graphically. (Come on, what did you
expect?)
It shows the percentage of my life I’ve been doing things. If the line is
going up, I’m doing it. If it is going down, I’ve stopped.
Things that go up and down I’ve stopped and restarted.

What happened with the violin playing?

I quit.
I was 13 and had a VERY intense instructor. He played with the symphony and wanted me to follow in his footsteps.
I had only take it up to have something to do with my father. My instructor told me my father was holding me back and I needed to stop playing with him.
And, he wanted me to start playing 4 hours a day.
At 13, that was too much to ask of me. So, I quit.
I have regretted quitting for decades now. But, the time I tried to go back to it, I proved I had lost the knack.

4 hours a day for a 13-year old? crazy. Unless they are seriously dedicated.

I have always regretted that I have NO musical talent, but lo! I do not. Sad.

For what it;s worth- you could probably start fiddle, if that interested you. I hear that's amenable to all ages and talent/skill levels.
