Lovely rainy Wednesday

Of all the U.S. weather, ours is the best. Unless you like it really hot. Here we are in mid-May and it's not yet 50 degrees out with rain. It's lovely. It will get hot. In August and maybe July. But not for long and not very and, when it does, it is desert dry so not at all sticky. It's really the best. I used to conjure on if I moved, where would I move. I even did some light research. Once I cleared the political and cultural hurdles, I focused on weather and no place I found even came close.

The new dresser did arrive yesterday afternoon. But I wanted to enjoy the freshly cleaned apartment before I tackled the project. Every Tuesday afternoon, after the cleaner leaves, it feels like a fresh start. Everything is in its place and all the surfaces are shiny clean. My kitchen and entryway have hard wood floors. It's the first time I've ever had hardwood and I am not a fan. I love my carpet but also this floor grabs every spec of dust it can find and displays it triumphantly. By Monday afternoon, the corners are white with dust and crud. At one point, the idiot marketing person suggested that in lieu of the white carpet they so desperately wanted me to keep, I just get hardwood throughout. Fuck no. And, now that I've lived with it, double/triple fuck no.

So this morning, I'll assemble and set up. And then fill.

I'm seriously considering getting Comcast Wifi back. The free wifi here is mostly fine but when it goes down, it seems to take forever to get all my stuff back running successfully. Last night, there was a 10 minute outage which is ok but then I have to reset up the printer, the router, the echo devices... The network stays up but has no internet. So everything kind of half works but not really. It's just a pain. But is it a pain worth $xx a month? I don't even know what xx is and finding out is more of a pain. I have to deal with a special department and getting to that department is even a pain. So maybe an outage here or there ain't so bad.

Baseball starts early today so that will be nice background while I work.

Today's project was filling a set of trough pots and securing them to the benches of the new picnic table. (This is from Tuesday, but it's after midnight so the date reads Wednesday. See some "before" pictures.) There are 6 troughs total, although one already had wild strawberries in it from earlier. Each bench holds 3 troughs. I got these and a bunch of other pots when Big Lots went out of business.

Good News

Good news includes all the things which make us happy or otherwise feel good. It can be personal or public. We never know when something wonderful will happen, and when it does, most people want to share it with someone. It's disappointing when nobody is there to appreciate it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our joys and pat each other on the back.

What good news have you had recently? Are you anticipating any more? Have you found a cute picture or a video that makes you smile? Is there anything your online friends could do to make your life a little happier?

Crud. It’s forecasted for rain again today.

Overslept and woke up at 8 AM. Bella didn't want to come in, so i did the "stick trick" and she came in.

I'm debating whether to shower or take a nap at lunch. You would think that I've gotten enough sleep. I probably should shower in case that the mower guy comes, although they are predicting rain this afternoon. Now they've stopped predicting rain. Whatever.

Ow. The base of my neck hurts. Good thing that I'm getting a massage this weekend.

Oliver and Lily are playing kitty racetrack with a little wrestling thrown in.

It's storming now. I want to take a nap. Ordered a deep dish pizza. Got my pizza. Bella was crying because she wanted it. Given that it has tomato sauce, that would be a “No”.

Napped. Bella is still asleep. Now she’s up.

Lily ate part of the lemon-blueberry cake that I got from the pizzeria. Bella absconded with the plastic box that the cake was in.

Spent too much time mucking around on Facebook.

Conferences

Several conferences relocate north of the border as Canadians refuse to travel to the U.S.

Travel to the U.S. from several countries has dropped recently, with Canada leading the pack: in April, the number of return trips among Canadians travelling to the U.S. plummeted by 19.9 per cent for air travel, and by a jarring 35.2 per cent for land travel.

I'm delighted to see this. I've been telling people for years that America isn't a safe place to visit, but it's much worse now than last year. In order to make improvements, there must be consequences for poor life choices. And while the people in power don't care who they hurt, they do care a lot about losing money.

Birdfeeding

Today is partly cloudy and mild. It rained yesterday.

I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches. I heard a woodpecker drumming, low and slow, so I suspect it's one of the bigger species.

I installed the four new tomato cages.

EDIT 5/13/25 -- I took some pictures around the yard.

I've seen a brown thrasher. I heard a blue jay screaming but didn't see it.

The first new iris is blooming under the maple tree. It's a lovely pale yellow. The scent is not quite as strong as some others, but with a definite sugary note like the purple-and-ivory ones in the wagonwheel garden. A bunch of poppies are blooming nearby too.

I put out the flats of plants and watered them.

EDIT 5/13/25 -- Today's project is the beige trough pots for the benches of the new picnic table. I have 6 total. One already has wild strawberries in it. I just filled a second with compost and potting soil, then put it on a bench. I also separated 24 of the S-hooks from their clips, so that I'll be able to make cords for anchoring them to the benches. I couldn't find suitable bungees premade, so DIY it is. Thank you, hippie parents and Depression Era grandparents for the gift of these DIY skills.

EDIT 5/13/25 -- I filled a second trough and put it on the new picnic table.

I've seen a catbird and a male cardinal.

EDIT 5/13/25 -- I moved several flats from the top of the picnic table to the ground, then some large pots from the benches to the top, making room for more troughs on the benches.

EDIT 5/13/25 -- I filled a third trough and put it on the new picnic table. I also did a bit more pot-shuffling. The south bench now has 2 troughs and an empty spot for the next.

EDIT 5/13/25 -- I filled the last two troughs and put them on the new picnic table. Each bench is now covered by 3 trough pots. \o/ After lunch I will need to make the anchor cords to keep them in place.

EDIT 5/13/25 -- My partner Doug came home with the 2 bags of potting soil, so we hauled those to the old picnic table. The lawn mower had died in the south lot and wouldn't restart, so we pushed that to the driveway so it can be picked up for repair.

EDIT 5/13/25 -- I made the first 2 anchor cords to secure the first trough pot on the north bench.

EDIT 5/13/25 -- I made 4 more anchor cords to secure 2 more troughs on the north bench. That leaves the 3 on the south side.

EDIT 5/13/25 -- I made the 6 anchor cords to secure the 3 trough pots on the south bench. It started spitting rain about halfway through, but not enough to interfere. So that part of the project is done, other than sowing the seeds in them. \o/

EDIT 5/13/25 -- I sowed 2 troughs of 'Avalanche' snow pea pods, 2 troughs of 'Sugar Ann' snap peas, and 1 trough of 'Thumbelina' baby ball carrots.

I watered the newly planted seeds. I watered the strawberry towers.

I took some pictures of the troughs and the sky at sunset. The sky was yellow-gray today, a version of yellow-blue, which is a color that most humans can't see. But I can see it, and it's beautiful, one of my favorite colors: liathbuí in Irish.

I brought in the flats of pots.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

It does amaze me

It amazes me how complicated conveying real estate turns out to be. It's been more than 30 years since I did it but still... There is no mortgage involved at all - buyer or seller. No trust. No contingencies. No nothing.

But, 4 million hoops and this very annoying lady who keeps calling me wanting shit. Today, it's payment for some kind of info. She says she will send me a link to pay. Then she keeps talking. I said send me the link and I'll pay. And she keeps talking. HOLY FUCK WOMAN get off the damn phone and send me the link.

She finally does. I pay. And learn, for the first time, that this hoop will take until the 20th to clear.

Bret The Realtor who, until the offer was signed, communicated way too much, has gone to the crickets. So I have no clue what to expect. Is this the last hoop? Will I have to pay more?

WTF is going on???? Yes, I could ask but screw it. It will happen when it does and then it will be all over. But I am very glad I don't have a mortgage to pay off and a seller's mortgage company to satisfy.

I have recently seen a fair number of headlines explaining what Genzers want/don't want, expect/don't expect, etc. Except, invariably I read it as Geezers which then turns the sentiment on its ear. And leads to LOL.

Yesterday I went down to aqua yoga early and spent 30 minutes swimming laps. I hadn't done that in a while. It was lovely and I think I'll do it again next Monday. I do wish they had more classes in the pool. And/or had their aqua fit classes at a different day/time. They have two aqua fit classes a week and they are 30 minutes after we finish up volleyball. If it were right after, I'd probably stay and do the class. But 30 minutes is too much time to kill when you are starving.

Today my new dresser comes. It will need assembly. I suspect it will not get here until late this afternoon. But, I will be glad to get the extraneous shit into it. I've had a bunch of it sitting out since last week when I made the decision and my closet needs relief, too.

The house cleaner comes at 1:30. I might pop over to the charity shop to hunt for more doll hair OR I might start a new puzzle in the elbow. I don't have to decide for a few hours yet.

I want to take a pill that will cure dry skin. Will one of you please invent that? Thanks. I don't like lotion - don't like applying it and don't like feeling lotioned. A pill would be so much better.

Yesterday, I spent several hours listening to my book and knitting. I discovered that my neck hates this. In the afternoon, I turned on one of those YouTube videos and that helped. I also owe my brother an apology. A couple of weeks ago, when his wife was in the hospital, he was bitching about his phone battery dying so fast. We have the same phone or close to it and my battery lasts for days. I figured he had a bad phone or bad settings or something. Thot snarky thots. Turns out, I now know he was listening to his book or music. Turns out, using the phone does drain the battery severely! Just turning it on, playing one game, and then turning it off - which is what I usually do - does not. But by 5 pm yesterday I was down to about 4%! Glad I kept those snarky thots to myself.

In Madrid

I'm in Madrid this week for a work offsite. After two and a half years at this job, I'm finally meeting my engineering team!

Flight over was good, I met up with three other Boston area coworkers at Logan. Because our events team is coordinated enough that they had a tab on the offsite spreadsheet for flight buddies so that we could travel together. Which meant that I got to match up with someone who had Uber on their phone for the trip from the airport to the hotel. (I'm from the generation that was trained never to get into a car with a stranger that you met on the Internet, so I don't feel comfortable using ride sharing apps and only Uber or Lyft with others.)

Unlike my trip to Italy, my hotel in Madrid has a *fabulous* mattress. When I take overnight/redeye flights I usually try not to go to sleep until the next night, but this time I took a jetlag nap, and it was glorious And the blackout curtains? Really work. When I woke up in the middle of the night, my room was pitch black. I had an excellent sleep.

I think my biggest problem with this trip is that Spaniards eat dinner late, the restaurants don't even open until 8:00 or 8:30 pm, and my body is used to having dinner much earlier than that. We'll see how I cope, Good thing I brought snacks so I don't get hangry.

The Car Is Fixed. Yay.

I stayed up late enough that Bella fell asleep in the kitchen. Tired pup. Oh wait a minute. Her eyes opened.

I’m looking for a pair of leather shoes for travel. Comfortable walking shoes. Bingo. Penny loafers on sale on Amazon. Actually, I found some Clark's shoes, which I like, so I'm going to return the others. One of them is a two-tone brown shoe!

Got up at 6:30 AM. Threw myself together and dropped the car off to be fixed. Ubered back.

Do I want to tour the Allerton gardens this Saturday? I have wanted to do so. They're also having a volunteer orientation, but i think that I should wait to do that. They have orientations quarterly. The next gardens walk is right after I get back from the conference in June, and I don't think that I'll feel up to it then. Oh, but I have flower arranging there on Sunday. Do I want to go there two days in a row? I could have lunch there afterward. It would get me out of bed early, and I bet that the gardens are pretty this time of year. It's early though. I'd have to leave around 9 AM. No, I think that I won't go this time. I'm looking at July. Or I could just walk through the gardens by myself after flower arranging.

Crud. I didn't register in time for pickleball.

I love love love my new Zenni glasses. I’m tempted to buy another pair.

new_glasses.jpg

My car is ready, but I’m going to wait until the late afternoon to pick it up. I need a nap! Couldn’t sleep.

It’s raining. The mower guy said that he would be there tomorrow. He also said that he'd give me an estimate on cleaning my gutters then too.

Bella did not want to come in. I finally grabbed a stick and pulled her up on the porch with it, and opened the door and threw the stick in. It worked.

Got the car.

So. Freaking. Tired. Napped and slept until 3 AM.

Superpowers And The Kitchen Sink

Where do you get your powers from, when you get them?

This is perhaps the greatest question of superpowered world-building. It can influence or even determine politics. It can implicate metaphysics. It can raise grave questions in ethics. It can box in theme. It constrains plot and character.

AND it has to have multiple answers, or else be very loose.

[personal profile] dialecticdreamer is hosting Magpie Monday with a theme of "recovery and rebuilding."

Most of my readers are familiar with the way this works: send a prompt, I write a gentle fiction story (I warn for swear words, implied violence, sex, et al) and if I were any good at embroidery any more, I’d embroider “EARNED happy ending” instead fo “Home, sweet home,” and have it framed. With those very loose limitations, ask for the story that you, the reader, want to see.
