The world asleep

Yesterday when I was driving into the airport at 3AM it struck me as strange. I'm not sure why as I had done the same thing only two weeks before, and drive through the night for the sword troupe several times a year.
But, yesterday is seemed like the world really was asleep as I drove through it.
The whole 45 minute drive I saw maybe a dozen other people, including those in cars on the road.
In day time it is usually hundreds if not thousands.

20+ years ago when we lived in the city along a major road there were times I'd get the same feeling. If I couldn't sleep in the middle of the night I'd sit in the window and look out the sleeping world.

I like the stillness in those times. I really have no idea why it seems true some nights and not others...

I feel the same during the dead of winter. When the sky is pink from the city lights, there's no road noise..let alone really any noise. I enjoy standing in our backyard just listening to nothing. It's so tranquil.

I feel that way sometimes too. Like when I take the girls out and no one is driving on the roads or walking and the parking lot is empty across the street from us.

I know what you mean. The few times I'm up in the middle of the night or very early AM, I have similar thoughts as you do.

I've had that feeling a couple of times when I've had to take a taxi in the middle of the night to get places, or to get home. Seeing the normally busy roads almost completely silent is very strange but peaceful.

On times when we've left for trips or had to be somewhere very early I often have the same thoughts - when you're the only one on the road it's easy to think you're the only one awake. Then I see another car and I wonder where they are goingso early in the morning :)
