I’m surprised I can’t stick my sword there…

Last night I was working on the plane tickets to Wales for the class on
making a bronze sword in April.
I got all of the way to the purchasing point and was about to click “buy”
when it popped up with a message block saying “please confirm you have read
our new hazardous material prohibitions”.

So, I clicked on the file and there it was:
“Axes, swords & knifes not allowed in carry on OR checked in luggage.”

When did that happen?
I’ve flown with my swords plenty of times, granted, always in checked
luggage. We had one troupe member who went to great lengths to demonstrate
why you shouldn’t mess around with the inspectors at the airport. But, the
swords still got on the plane.

I’m going to have to figure this one out. The whole point is to get the
sword. I don’t want to make it and then not be able to have it.

Ship it home via mail?

That is my thought as well.

Domestically I don't think it's a big deal via FAA reg's to have a sword in the bottom of the plane

but International, and if I remember, UK specifically, no nothing sharp and sword like.

Stupid but….Well, don't need to go there.

Check with the place doing the lessons, perhaps they have encountered this problem with
students coming in from outside the country, or may have a shipping option already set up?

Send it home by mail? May be a bit expensive, though.

Oh no..I hope you can find a way.

Could you ship it back?

[identity profile] hotclaws.livejournal.com 2014-02-13 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah that would have been my suggestion.

Having looked round,it may be you can get a permit to ship it.You'd have to check out the exact detail as it varies from airline to airline and state to state.

What - are they afraid that the dwarves living in the luggage compartment will get to it and start a war?

I guess have it packed up and shipped back. Ridiculous really, but what you gonna do? MAybe you could purchase a lockable airline approved firearms cse to put it in, but you'll definitely have to pay extra for it going over and coming back, plus the british will raise alot of questions over what is in it... easier to have it shipped back, I guess.

I've flown with my swords here in the US many times. in a special case. Answer the questions when you check in. No problem.

The airline in question actually lets you bring guns on the plane if they are checked in and approved.
But, not swords.

Doesn't make much sense to me. Guns yes, swords no?

Cultural artifact theft issues, perhaps?

[identity profile] fbhjr.livejournal.com 2014-02-14 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I think it is just the airline.
My cousin's husband was on an archeological dig in Israel and brought home an old axe head. They were very clear it MUST go in check in luggage.

I've flown with sword domestically at least half a dozen times. I've seen them checked in with the hilt still hanging out of the bag. And, that was less than 6 months after 911.

So, it must just be this airline.
Maybe because folks have tried to steal objects and fly home with them.
That's as good of a reason as any I've heard.

sorry to hear this.

oh dear :( You best check with the airline direct.

My friend silme here is SCA and may havevWisdom about shipping swords, since many people do that in the UK.

[identity profile] fbhjr.livejournal.com 2014-02-20 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
The guy teaching the class says he ships them here to the US fairly often and will even help us package them up for shipping.
Then I guess we'll need to find a postal office to send them.
I wouldn't think that too hard.

The airline is where I heard it....

[identity profile] fbhjr.livejournal.com 2014-02-20 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
And yet you are not very visible in the photo...

[identity profile] endlessblush.livejournal.com 2014-02-20 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
:/ ... wonder if that is just that airline or all airlines? I wouldn't think it a problem if it's in the baggage area? Have you asked about shipping it home via mail or is that too expensive?

[identity profile] fbhjr.livejournal.com 2014-02-20 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
We have already made arrangements to ship them. The person who runs the class tells us he ships them all of the time. I just don't want it to take weeks in transit...
