Meme from [livejournal.com profile] endlessblush, part 2

[livejournal.com profile] endlessblush had this meme on her LJ the other day. I did
the first 5 questions yesterday, instead of one a day. I’ll do the next 5
today.

1) Are you an optimist, a pessimist or a realist and is this something you
would like to change?
2) Do you write letters or emails for fun?
3) What is essential for your happiness and what could you live without?
4) If you could relive one day in your life, which one would it be?
5) Are you good at setting boundaries?
6) What do you want your life to be like at age 75?
7) Would you wish your childhood on others?
8) What are you skeptical about?
9) Which musical instrument would you like to be able to play?
10) Do you forgive and forget?
11) Would you consult a psychic?
12) What is your idea of heaven?
13) What is it hard for you to understand?
14) What do you think is the meaning of life?
15) What are you curious about?

6) What do you want your life to be like at age 75?
Happy.

I have been criticized for not having a more detailed plan than that. But,
when it comes down to it, that’s what matters, right?
My father didn’t retire until he was 75 and then he consulted for several
more years. He had plenty of money, savings, retirement plan, a house and
all that. He wasn’t very happy.

If I’m happy, and hopefully my wife is with me and happy too, then that’s
all that really matters for me.

7) Would you wish your childhood on others?
Sure.
My parents provided me food, shelter, clothing and an education. There are
millions if not billions of people who don’t get that.
Yes, my parents were very bad about pushing me to a life they wanted for me
instead of one that I wanted or would be good at.
They were abysmally bad at supporting or encouraging me in the things I
wanted to do.
And, my mother embezzled quite a bit of money from me.
We fought constantly while I was growing up and as an adult up until I
decided just to cut them off.
But, compared to that food, shelter, clothing and education stuff, it’s
small fries.

There are still times I envy folks to have parents who support and
encourage them. It seems like that would be nice.

8) What are you skeptical about?
I try to be skeptical about everything. But, often I don’t manage it and I
take things at face value.
It’s a failing. I’m trying to do better.

9) Which musical instrument would you like to be able to play?
Almost any. When I was young I played the violin for a good percentage of
my life. (47% when I was 13…) I have regretted giving it up for many
years. I like music and it would be nice to be able to make some. But, I
can buy a lot too…

10) Do you forgive and forget?
Yes and no.
I suppose you can say I’ve gotten better about forgetting as my memory is
much more full that it once was so I don’t remember as many things as I
once did.
But, I still remember a lot.

Forgiving is different. I do my very best to forgive people who ask me to
do so.
That’s the key.
If you do something that I don’t like and never apologize, I’m going to
assume you did it on purpose and not forgive you.
The longer between the offense and the apology, the less likely I am to
believe you when you apologize.
And, there are a few people out there that would have to go to major
extents to get me to believe them.
But, there is no reason to think they even care.

Why don't you pick up the violin again?

[identity profile] fbhjr.livejournal.com 2014-01-15 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I can't stand how I sound now 35 years out of practice.

haha, I can relate! But think of the advantage you have for having played before.

For me that makes it worse as I say "I should be able to do this" even when I can't.
If I did start again, it should be something new where I wouldn't have expectations.

I started playing the violin when I was six. I had to give it up a couple of years later when the only violin teacher in town moved away. I can't remember a thing of how to play it now.

I started playing the flute when I was twelve and still play it now (with a 10 year break of not playing it...). It's fun to pass the time with.

This reminded me of the infamous Paladin apology.

There's some interesting questions on these meme. I think I'm going to do mine all in a few days too.
I enjoyed reading your answers.
