Adventures, Science Fiction, SF conventions, German body parts, tough streets of Shrewsbury

Last night we were going over to [livejournal.com profile] zosh & [livejournal.com profile] yebo’s house to watch more of the Blake’s 7 collection he got for Christmas.

I was a bit worried when my wife wasn’t home at the usual time and there were emergency vehicles of all kinds in front of our building.

I guess it was someone in the next building have a problem of some kind. I’m not sure they needed police, fire and the ambulance, but I guess it is good to know folks come prepared.

My wife was only stuck late getting her hair done, and once it was she got home we were off to watch 30 year old British SF and eat chicken wings.
It was fun.

When we got home, even the streetlights were pretty.

This morning we went into Boston to help out Mark at the Boskone science fiction convention with a panel called: “Higgins Armory - Misuse of Weapons in Movies and on TV: Historians and sword experts from the Higgins Armory talk about how movie makers don't understand weapons.”

I’m not sure which of us were the historians and which of us the sword experts. My humanities were done in history 30 years ago. But, it was colonial US history.
Maybe Mark is a sword expert. I’m not.

There was a boat show next to the hotel. So, we parked there. It was a ways from the hotel.

This meant we cut through the boat show lobby getting there.

But, we got there.

We got there early.
This is my general view of science fiction conventions.

Waiting.
I did a very quick tour of the dealers room and art show. I ran into [livejournal.com profile] silverdragonma there. They didn’t have the game I wanted. No artwork really turned me around.

We had picked a bunch of movies to show. We showed them. The folks watching seemed to like it.
It was OK.

Then, it was walking back to the car.
I liked the view of south Boston.

Particularly the 3 different churches with very different towers.

My wife liked the view, but also wanted to finish carrying stuff back to the car.

We were parked quite a ways away.

It was off where the cherry pickers spend their weekends.

Then, we set off to have a late lunch at Jacob Wirth’s closer to downtown Boston.

This meant driving through Chinatown.

We parked at a garage and walked over.
I’ve got to say, signs like this confuse me.

Why do I only have to be cautious of slow resident vehicles? Shouldn’t I worry about the fast ones? Can’t nonresidents be a danger too?

Then, at Jacob Wirth’s there was my confusion over their banners.
Men’s pants, women’s torsos and beer?

What’s that about?

But, the food is good.
At my wife’s suggestion we had the German Chocolate whoopie pie for desert.

Not quite so big without the cream.

On the way home we stopped at the market.
I thought this very funny.

The mean streets of Shrewsbury where the police park in the fire lane to get videos.

Well at least they respond to the neighbors when they need it. Right?

I loved Bake 7 when I was a young adult.

and at least it wasn't 3 degrees and icy for Boskone. It always used to be so cold when I would attend.

We talked about how it was in the 40's and we didn't have to climb over snow banks to get there.

I'm intruiged by the fact that the Con didn't warrant more than a mention. Verrrrry interesting.

We were only there for 2 hours.
And, one of those hours was the panel we were doing.
I spent less than 15 minutes looking at the rest of the con, and that was all art show and dealers room.
The rest was waiting for our panel to start.

I could talk about the fake names we were given or how Mark took 20 minutes to get his tie right, but I didn't think that was very interesting.

I love picture posts, and I love the church pictures, I love the architecture.
Also the German Chocolate whoopie pie looks amazing with or without whipped cream!
