Art & flowers

My wife spent the morning off learning new sword fighting moves while I ran errands and chatted about Pensacola with [livejournal.com profile] morgan_lafaye.

When my wife got back, she and I headed off to the Worcester Art Museum Flora in Winter exhibit

It is very popular and the busiest I’ve seen the WAM. We had to drive around for a bit to find parking. Many of the roads nearby have places our friends used to live many years ago. On the other side of the parking lot is the building where my wife and I first met.
But, we were there for the museum, not sight seeing.

The “Flora In Winter” is a special 4 day only exhibit where they have many different floral arrangers come in and do floral arrangements based on the artwork in the museum.

They place the inspired floral arrangements next to the art in question. They have roving tour guides to try and help people see the correlation. Some of it was easier then others.

Some I didn’t get at all. My wife and I both didn’t get how this small bowl of flowers translated to the very large landscape above it.

In addition to the ones that are connected to paintings, there are many that just seem to be inspired by the museum and fit with the decor.

My wife was very fond of the large “spray” of flowers in the Chapter House.

The parking was so bad that when we left a SUV backed up a street the wrong way to play vulture for our parking space. We were happy to get away from that madness and went up to O’Connor’s for a nice late lunch.

Small bowl of flowers with very large landscape

I think the idea is the arrangement is to emulate the composition of the landscape painting, as well as represent the colors and highlights/shadows.

the middle of the arrangement, with the round seeds/grape-like area I think is supposed to have the feel of the center of the painting; the pinkish long leafed flowers sticking out of both sides I think are to emulate the rolling background/horizon and the color is to represent the color of the sky/clouds in the sunset.

The hanging/drooping light green leaves from the bottom of the arrangement I think is supposed to emulate the rolling hills off to the right side of the painting; the yellow flowers on the top are to emulate the tree tops being highlighted by the sunlight.

I'm glad you and Mal had a good time, despite the parking fiasco. It's always a gamble with the museum, as their capacity is very limited. I've almost missed entire classes in the evenings due to museum functions/events. I also always seem to hit the ramp of the Lancaster Street lot so it scrapes my car's underside. Ah well. Still a great museum

Maybe.
The woman giving the tour seemed to think it was supposed to invoke the serenity of the painting.
I agree about the colors and such.
But, I'm not sure I get the serenity.

That piece of flora was my least favorite-it didn't evoke the landscape to me and seemed to be over-worked. Using a truism from my first year at art school, you shouldn't work too small.

Yep, I agree, it's not the best. The concept I think was a good idea, so it can certainly stand to be re-worked and attempted again...albeit a little bigger would help.

The flowers were beautiful. Prehaps the small arrangement, having the colors of the painting, even a roling form like the hills was all the artist was allowed to use for flowers by their boss?
