Individual costs of politics

One of my former coworkers who was at our reunion dinner Tuesday was telling us about how the current political climate is causing her quite a bit of grief.

She is jumping through all sorts of legal hoops and challenges to adopt her own son.
She and her wife had her son around a decade and a half ago and have adopted a second child as well. From all indications I’ve had, they’re great parents, the kids are happy and it is working out well for everyone.

But, my former coworker is not the biological mother of the child she’s help raise since his birth. And, she and her wife are now worried that if there was some sort of accident or emergency, my coworker would be denied parental rights.
So, a very expensive, labor intensive, legally challenging process is being done to prevent that. And, it is clearly very difficult for her in all possible ways.

To quote her directly: “I’m a gay woman in a conservative state and I don’t know how long my rights will last.”

Most of the political debate is about large sweeping issues. Thousands of immigrants, trillions of dollars, and such.
It’s easy to be desensitized to that.

My friend and her wife are both successful engineering managers and have resources to be able to do this sort of thing.
I’m sure there are far more who can’t muster what it takes to fight this kind of thing.

There are large sweeping things, but it always comes down to individual people.
And, I have very strong feelings against the folks who would cause them harm.

Totally agree. Especially where it does not affect the lives of the conservative people in any way, so why they are so concerned with other people, while screeching about their "individual rights" and etc. But as we've had to learn the hard way, it's not worth trying to reason with hypocrites

I never know what to say about shit like this, because it’s just so shitty. A reflection of how social constructs are ultimately just a way for certain peoples to have control over those they deem “others.” Whether “others” means poor people, gay people, black people, old people, etc etc. Whole systems of unfairness based on social norms.

I hope they are able to overcome this one.
