More signs of being old

Last night, my wife and I took another ride out to The House of Ick to deliver groceries. We didn’t stay long, I refused to even sit on the cat hair covered chairs, then took off for home.
On the way home, we stopped for gas at a station in Holden. In my wife’s words “this station is a lot like the ones down south”. I agree, but couldn’t tell you quite why.
We pulled back onto Main Street, and heard a strange rattling on the roof of the car.
We looked at each other.
“Gas cap?” she asked.
“Gas cap,” I confirmed.
So, adding to the signs that at 45 I am over the hill is leaving the gas cap on the top of the car and driving away.
Sad.
But, not as sad as that time with my underwear.

(The fact I did the same thing with my briefcase when I was 22, putting that American Tourister ad to the test, is completely irrelevant.)

I once drove off with my cell phone on top of the car.
The phone started ringing and I thought, "wow, that sounds like my phone is buried in the trunk inside a coat, under a sheep."
***We were on the way to the Highland Renaissance Faire, after all. It's BYOS...Bring Your Own Sheep. :-)

The phone apparently stayed on the roof for several miles after it rang, and then I merged onto the interstate.
Luckily, it bounced off the trunk as it departed, and I looked in the side mirror just in time to see it bounce several times on the asphalt before disappearing into the tall grass in the median.
Needless to say, I went back and risked life and limb crossing the interstate, and had the girl who was with me call my phone repeatedly.
I actually found it! And it even still worked!
Cosmetically, things were not so good. :-)

Wow. What kind of phone? Sounds like a good one...

It was one of those Nextel phones with the thick rubber coating.
Sturdiest phone I've ever had. :-)

I've actually never left the gas cap or a cell phone on the roof, but I have left a pair of gloves once time and a hat another time.. both of these were before I turned 40 even, so I don't think that I could blame those on old age - just plain forgetfulness !

Luckily I will never have the issue with the gas cap.. mine has an attached strap so it won't leave the car.. otherwise i probibly would have gone through a few by now.

And wich Gas station? the Hess or the Citgo?
If it's the Hess, I think it's because of the designe of it, one way in, one way out, and the pumps are set up perpindicular to the road instead of paralell, with the station store in the middle.

Hess.
My cap used to have a strap. It broke a long time ago.
The new one doesn't have one either...

I have a little clip on the inside of the little door. It holds the cap quite nicely and easy to use...Now, the problem is full serve stations where the attendant puts it on the roof or on the pump cabinet *rolls eyes*

I think I've left a soda cup full of drink on the roof once, but had remembered it was up there before backing out of the space...I think I've forgotten the scraper-brush on the roof or trunk once or twice.

Coffee Mugs, sodas, bodices, belts, pouches, they've all taken trips on top of my cars. I have the memory of a sieve....
