Eye update

I went to the Worcester Ophthalmology Associates today for a checkup on my eye problem that showed up late last fall.

They ran me through the tests from before including:
Normal vision
Eye pressure
Color vision
Visual field (The one that had been the problem.)
Retina & optic nerve exam

The good news:
20/20 vision in the areas I can see
Eye pressure down to 15 from 21
Color vision 100%
Visual field improved
Retina & nerve swelling down and looking normal

He tells me I have a “crowded” optic nerve. I guess that means that the nerves are bunched together in a smaller space than average. So, swelling makes it more likely to cause damage as they are packed in tight.

The visual field was the big one. When I was there 4 months ago there was a lot missing from my left eye.
Today’s test still shows a lot missing, but less is missing than before.

I pestered him until he gave me a copy of today’s results:

(He called the old one up on the screen, but wouldn’t print it for me.)

My right eye I’m told is fairly normal. A blind spot where the nerve attaches as everyone has, and nothing else.
The darker areas of the left eye are the places I can’t see.

It looks like a lot, but compared to the one before it is noticeably better.
And, on the photos of the retina, even I could see that it looked better.

The doctor was very restrained in saying it was better.
“This episode of swelling has passed,” was the closest he would say.
“I can see that the one 4 months ago had a much bigger missing area,” I said. “So, this seems like and improvement to me.”
“It certainly seems that way,” he agreed.

He had said that he had planned to recommend steroid shots right into my eye to counteract what he thinks was probably an allergic reaction to something.
“But, we can always do that if it happens again!” he said, perking up a bit. “Or, if it happens in the other eye!”
“How likely is that?”
“I’ve been doing this for 40 years and only saw it happen in both eyes once.”
“That doesn’t sound likely to me.”
“We’ll be ready if it happens!”

He did say he doesn’t think I need to go back for another year.
I go to see the Opto-neurologist a week from Tuesday.
Hopefully he will also agree things are getting better.

Glad to hear your eye is getting better after all - I seem to remember that back when it happened it wasn't certain that it would?

Since no one knows the cause, it is very hard to say if it will get better or worse.
What they said was that if the (unknown) cause went away then there probably would be some healing. But, they couldn't say how much or how long it would take.

So, it's good that whatever it is seems to have gone away and some healing has started.
They did say that it was very unlikely it would ever totally heal.
But, any improvement is good.

Long time no post - I was wondering how you're doing.

Improving, that's great!

I've been sick, so haven't been posting.
Hope to be back to it soon...

Progress is good. At this rate, you'll be doing needlepoint soon!

Yay improvement! Booooo any chance at getting a shot directly into your eye. Let's hope that doesn't come to pass!
