Sword fighting at the libraries

This morning was fairly grey, but we set off for our shows in high hopes of the rain holding off.

We saw some terrible driving on the turnpike. A white car that wanted to drive 25 miles an hour above the speed limit, and it he couldn’t he would pass in the breakdown lane.

We saw him do it several times and almost cause an accident. I tried to call the police about it, but couldn’t get through in between towns.

(As much as this guy’s driving bothered me, it bothered me just as much that I couldn’t get through to the emergency services along a major road only 30 minutes from where I live.)

Despite the bad driving, we got to the first library quite early and I was able to stop and finish my book.

Soon [livejournal.com profile] morgan_lafaye and [livejournal.com profile] palusbuteo joined my wife and me and we got all set up on the library lawn.
And, even on a cloudy day without many folks watching, we began the show.

When I say "not may people watching" I mean it.

We started with only 2.
By the time I was throwing spears at Palusbuteo it was up to 6.

Of course, one of them worked there at the library, but I’ll take what I can.

If you’re ever going to do this sort of thing remember the old saying "teach your wife to fight with a sickle and pretty soon she’ll be skinning your arm in front of half a dozen people."

People still say that, right?

My wife, in a show of librarian solidarity, gave the local librarian a sword lesson.

An hour of doing a sword show with only 4 people can be tiring.

But, off to the second library for the next show.

We had no horrible drivers on the way to this one, but we did have folks parking in handicapped spots who weren’t handicapped. That is also bad.

For reasons not clear to us, this library had pushed out show back 1/2 hour from when we expected it. So, we had time to wait.

We were on their sign as well, but not the side that faced the street.

To be fair, more people went in and out than went past. So, it might still be a good option.

After our break, more sword fighting.

The kids seemed particularly happy to put Palusbuteo in the bag today.

We had more of a crowd at this show, but still not a huge one.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll put on a show for just one person if they want to see it.
But, I feel bad when we’re paid to do a show to draw people in and it doesn’t seem to work.
We did get a few folks who were just walking down the road to come over and look. So maybe that’s good.

My wife and I did stop to ponder the buckler that just hovered in air between us.

We figured it must be Magneto. So, after the shows we came home and went to see the new X-Men movie in case it was a sign.
We liked the movie.
So, maybe it was.

Then, we went off to dinner.

It was a busy day. Sword shows at two different libraries, driving an hour each way to the shows, X-Men movie and then eating out.
But, it was fun too.

Wow, I hate drivers like that! Also, should he be displaying a number plate on the back? Or is that the thing that looks like it's flipped up?

Sorry there weren't more people at your shows. I'd love to see a show :)

They had a paper number plate that was flapping in the wind so we couldn't read it. That means it is probably a car being moved from one car dealership to another rather than someone who owns the car.

I know it is unlikely, but if you are ever in the area you are certainly welcome to see one of our shows. Or, stop by one of our practices and we'll do one for you.

Ah I see.

What part of the States are you in? I'm sure I could probably find out from previous entries but I'm feeling lazy tonight :P

The closest big city is Boston Massachusetts. That's about an hour east of us.
We're about 3 hours north east of New York City.
So the "New England" part or upper north east.

I've been to Boston before. I've actually been to quite a bit of New England before. It's a beautiful part of the world.

If you're ever back in the area, you're certainly welcome to stop by.
