New Phones and flaming DJs

After a couple of weeks of playing “Where’s Waldo” with the new iPhones, I
spotted one only 30 miles (50km) from home yesterday and bought it over the
internet.
It was my second choice in colors, but given it just went on sale in more
countries yesterday, my monthly credit card bill just closed and it is a
mall that used to be my sister’s favorite place to take her, I figured it
was worth the drive.

Last night my wife and I went to dinner at the Welcome India place we like
in Framingham. OK, that is close to the Apple store that didn’t have it in
stock, but it is at least on the way.
And, it is one of our favorite places and we both were really in the mood
for it.
She had met me for lunch as well, as she had the day off, and the place we
were going to go was closed for the holiday. So, this made up for that.

When I got to the Apple store it was fairly empty; of customers and
employees. But, I found someone in the Apple shirt and asked them for the
phone I had reserved.
“Dude! You got a gold one!” he shouted when he looked up my order. Then
he insisted on high fiving me.
The few people in the store seemed happy about it.
“Aren’t you excited?” he asked me.
“Yes, of course,” I said. “Can we now get it so I can leave? I promised
to be more excited when I actually have it.”

He brought it out and got it turned on for me. I did not stay for him to
show me everything and get it going. I knew I had a backup for the
previous one to restore at home, so took the phone and ran.
Of course when I got home I couldn’t remember the password to the encrypted
backup and had to start all over again anyhow.
But, being in the store wouldn’t have helped that.

It is nice. It does seem fast at doing things, and that is really what I
wanted. The gold? Eh, sure, why not. (My first choice was the black one.
But, still none of those in the Northeast that I could find.)

I did not yet get the bluetooth hooked to my car. So, on the way in I had
to listen to the radio instead of to my music as is normal.

Flipping through the dial I stopped when I heard a familiar voice reading
the news.
“Is that the DJ we set on fire two years ago?” I asked myself.
At the end of the news he said his name and that confirmed it is the same
guy.
I spent the rest of the ride remembering how good a show that was:

So far this is a pretty good start to the week.
My wife meets me for lunch.
For dinner we go to one of our favorite places.
I get a new phone.
I’m reminded of one of our best shows.

I hope I haven’t used up all the good for the week by Tuesday morning…
