Deep South adventures, day 6

I woke up about 3:30 in the morning. As the sun comes up before 2:30 and goes down about 11:45, it was already light.
I looked out the window and saw Antarctica going by and could’t help but watch for a while.

After breakfast they announced that the first landing place that had been picked was too windy to use the landing boats, and there is no other way to get to shore. So, instead we sailed around the bay near there.
It was also snowing a fair bit. I agree the weather wasn't great.

There was a deck full of folks sad they hadn’t gone ashore around me. Getting their attention only took saying “Hey look! A whale!”

While nice to see, the mother and calf were of more interest to me as we don’t see them as much up our way.

The whole ship came around to let everyone else see the whales.

Even my wife saw them!

It was a nice cruise around the bay. But, I would have preferred to be on shore.

It was cold, windy and damp up there.
Not everyone seems as bother by this as others.

Then, off to Deception island.

While we sailed over we went to a lecture on antarctic ice. It was very complete going back to the formation of the planet.

While watching the entrance to Deception Island from our balcony, we found a used match on the deck. They tell folks not to smoke on their balconies and especially not throw things over as they blow back to someone else.
This is not just a theory.

Deception Island is a volcano where you can sail into the caldera.
The intent had been to go there, get off on the beach, and they’d let folks swim.
But, there was still a gale force wind blowing. (80km/hr with higher gusts)
So, again, we had to stay on the ship and swimming in a volcano in Antarctica was cancelled. (This was very sad for me…)

But, we did sail around inside the volcano and it is very cool.
I’ve got video of it too, but it isn’t edited, just raw footage.

I continue to see faces in the sides of hills. In rocks or hills.

My wife wanted this photo…

Then, back out to see where we are heading south to the mainland.

We did see another ship going north as we went south. So, not as isolated as it might seem.

As we ate dinner, several icebergs floated past. They’re getting pretty common as we go south.

As we ate dinner, the ship hit a big wave and several of the ice buckets in the dining room when over.

“Oh no! An iceberg!” Someone shouted.
But, my wife made me stop…

While sad both our trips ashore were cancelled, it is still an amazing trip.
