Saint George
Apr. 23rd, 2010 06:14 pmHere it is on Saint George’s day.
No parades. No “kiss me I’m English” buttons. No one saying “Happy Saint George’s day”. No news casts on the history of England, or famous English descendants.
I am doing a beef and mushroom pie for dinner.
I’m not sure that ranks up there with corned beef as a cultural food.
As I said back in March, I’m 3/8 Irish and 5/8 English. My cultural background isn’t terribly uncommon, at least here in New England. So, why isn’t this day even known by most people?
My Irish ancestors came here and tried to erase their history. My English ancestors published their histories in book form. (On my mother’s father’s side it is up to 2 volumes.) They’ve got monuments and parks in their name where I don’t even know my grandmother’s true original last name.
So, it seems very strange to me that it is the Irish that get the big party.
Not saying they shouldn’t.
You’d just think that the folks who were so proud of where they came from would want a party on their saint’s day too.

Apr. 23rd, 2010 08:23 pmSome of you have said that if the college where my wife works has another one of those free Indonesian concerts like they have before, you'd be interested. (I'm looking at you
palusbuteo &
morgan_lafaye.)
The next one is one week from tonight, April 30 at The College of the Holy Cross. It's free. Show up early to get a seat as the place fills up to become standing room only pretty fast.

Fucking FedEx!
Apr. 23rd, 2010 08:38 pmThe FedEx driver again had my downstairs neighbor sign for a package. My neighbor left it in the front foyer for me, where it disappeared.
I don't blame my neighbor as he was trying to help and I've never had a package stolen from there in 16 1/2 years. And some of my other neighbors have had things sit there for days without problem.
FedEx got a signature, so they can't be held responsible.
But, I'm really mad about this. It was only a $20 thing, but I get all sorts of stuff shipped. And now I feel I can't trust FedEx at all with it.
